Soulthread Review

Most AI companion apps sell you a chatbot and hope you fill in the story yourself. Soulthread does the opposite. It hands you characters that actually remember, drops them into written scenarios with real stakes, and treats the whole thing like interactive fiction rather than an endless small-talk loop. After a couple of weeks living in it, that framing is what makes it stick.

The core idea is memory. Every character carries layered long-term memory that persists across sessions, so the person you talked to last night is the same person tonight, callbacks and all. On top of that sit two ways to play: Story Mode, with scripted branching arcs where your choices carry consequences, and Free Chat for open-ended conversation whenever you just want to talk.

Layered Memory That Sticks

This is the part I kept testing to see if it would break, and mostly it did not. Characters recalled details from earlier sessions, referenced decisions I had made days before, and adjusted how they treated me based on the history we had built. It is not magic, and very long threads still lose a thread now and then, but it holds together far better than the goldfish memory most platforms ship with.

Story Mode vs Free Chat

Story Mode is the headline. These are authored branching arcs where a choice can close a door for good, which gives your decisions weight that free-form roleplay rarely manages. Free Chat is the pressure valve: no script, no stakes, just conversation with a character who remembers you. Having both under one roof means you can jump between a plotted night and an idle one without switching apps.

Multi-Agent Scenes

Scenes can run more than one AI character at once, and they play off each other instead of taking polite turns. It makes group moments feel less like a queue and more like a room with people in it. It is also where the writing gets to show off, since the characters react to one another and to you at the same time.

Still Here: Red Long Night

The launch title is Still Here: Red Long Night, an alternate-history resistance drama set in a 1997 where Soviet forces occupy America. It is a strong showcase for what Story Mode is for: heavy atmosphere, moral gray zones, and branches that actually matter. It is mature narrative, not porn, and it treats its subject with more weight than the genre usually bothers with.
